Research

I pursue doctoral research on the design of medical software at the University of Lapland. I am interested in how design decisions are made, developed, tested and justified in a regulated environment.

Doctoral research

Design strategies for medical software development and clinical shared decision-making

University of Lapland · since 2021

I examine how design and agile development work in an environment where solutions need to be safe, defensible and traceable. In medical software, every design choice has to be justified and documented, yet the software still has to work in the everyday practice of clinicians and patients.

I bring to this research my experience of developing software and data solutions in healthcare.

What I study

  • How do clinicians take part in design?

  • How are usability-related risks identified and managed?

  • How does iterative development fit a regulated environment?

  • How are design decisions documented and made traceable?

Approach

My first research article is a qualitative study of designer practice in Finland. It examines how the methods of service and UX design are adapted to the development of regulated healthcare software.
